I’ve never covered ‘how to pack’ style post on the blog until now, which is a surprise considering the amount of trips I’ve taken in recent years since starting the blog. It’s one of those things you can constantly try to perfect but still not have it ‘nailed’. I’m definitely not saying I have packing down to a fine art, but I’ve definitely streamlined my approach in recent years and I thought I would share my tips with you guys:
- Perfect Luggage is essential, something sturdy and stylish is a must – think of proper ‘grown-up’ luggage as an investment (just as important as a handbag or great piece of jewellery).
- Decide on your style of luggage – I have a small suitcase that I picked up from Luggage Direct and a leather overnight bag from Topshop and both have proved to be winners. If I’m headed somewhere like Melbourne I’ll use the suitcase, and the overnight bag if the destination is somewhere more relaxed like Byron Bay.
- I don’t know how I feel about the rolling clothes technique. I’m still a ‘folding’ type girl and this has worked for me, but each to their own. One thing I do stand by is fitting everything together like a puzzle. For example, put your jewellery into a sock and fit it inside a sneaker. Use every possible space! If there’s something weirdly shaped try and fit something else next to it so it fits perfectly. Use every nook and cranny available to you!
- Force yourself to take less by planning outfits for each day. I never used to do this and I am so glad that now I do. Not preparing outfits beforehand is the biggest cause of overpacking – just throw everything in and hope you can organise it on the flip side. It never happens and you’re left standing there thinking – “What on earth am I going to wear?” if you plan your outfits in advance you’re one step ahead and you’ll definitely take less with you.
- If it’s a shopping trip (like a recent trip to Melbourne) pack only two outfits which can be taken from day to night by switching up a shoe. This leaves half your suitcase space for new purchases! Options could be jeans and blazer combo for day 1 and dress and blazer for day 2. Both you can wear with sneakers or a heel for evening.
- Don’t take ‘extras’ you never need them!
The aim is to take less ‘stuff’ and feel light and free on your trip! I would love to hear your packing tips if you have any to share! xo
